 Educator Profile: Manwe

Manwe has been teaching dance for the past 20 years. He believes in the power of versatility as the foundation for a long dance career. His goal is to ensure that his students can walk into any audition and execute the dance given to them with confidence and skill.

Background and Philosophy

Manwe attributes his versatile dance foundation to his mother, who ensured he was trained in ballet, modern, jazz, and West African dances from an early age. Growing up in New York, living in the Hip Hop culture also surrounded by a rich mix of Caribbean family members, he was exposed to various social dances such as salsa, bachata, merengue, and the hustle. Receiving his formal training from School of the Arts in San Francisco as well the Alvin Ailey School of Dance and Broadway Dance Center. This diverse exposure enriched his dance vocabulary and performance skills.

Unique Approach

Manwe emphasizes the importance of developing a personal point of view in dance. He encourages his students to find what makes them unique through regular journaling. Each student keeps a journal to document their class experiences, fostering a sense of accountability and accomplishment.

Inclusivity in Dance

Manwe is passionate about making dance accessible to everyone. He works not only with aspiring professional dancers but also with children, introducing them to the art form in a fun and engaging way. He challenges social stereotypes about who can dance, promoting dance as a form of communication beneficial for physical and mental health.
